A Feasibility Analysis of Studies on Linen from the Shroud of Turin Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
نویسندگان
چکیده
The possibility of developing future investigations on the Turin Shroud by means of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is discussed in the present article. Various traditional techniques such as the static spectroscopy in homogeneous or nonhomogeneous magnetic fields or the “Magic Angle Spinning (MAS)” technique and more innovative techniques such as “Cross-Polarisation”, that allows a better signal-to-noise ratio in C atoms, are here considered and discussed. These techniques are applied to recent linen samples to show the possibility of detecting the H and C atoms concentration in the Turin Shroud. Other investigation techniques, to be developed in future, are discussed; among them, the evaluation of other atoms such as N or a comparative analysis between NMR results and that obtained from the radioactivity mapping in the Shroud by means of a Geiger-Müller detector.

Analysis of micro-particles vacuumed from the Turin Shroud
Aim of the present analysis of particles, in the range of 3-30 m, vacuumed from the Turin Shroud, is to perform a classification and possibly to refer them to the environments in which, from historical information, it results that the Shroud was exposed. Grains of pollen, linen and cotton fibers, mites, spores and fungi, mineral particles and particles possibly coming from body fluids have bee...
متن کاملThe Shroud of Turin: an Amino-carbonyl Reaction (maillard Reaction) May Explain the Image Formation
The Shroud of Turin is a large piece of linen that shows the faint image of a man on its surface: it has been claimed to be the shroud of Jesus. Here we report evidences that colour can be produced by reactions between reducing sugars, left on the cloth by the manufacturing procedure, and amines deriving from the decomposition of a corpse. Treatment of a cloth prepared according to the ancient ...
متن کاملColoring linens with excimer lasers to simulate the body image of the Turin Shroud.
The body image of the Turin Shroud has not yet been explained by traditional science; so a great interest in a possible mechanism of image formation still exists. We present preliminary results of excimer laser irradiation (wavelength of 308 nm) of a raw linen fabric and of a linen cloth. The permanent coloration of both linens is a threshold effect of the laser beam intensity, and it can be ac...

In 1988, Carbon-14 findings from three Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) Labs independently dated a sample removed from the Shroud of Turin: unarguably the most widely studied linen cloth in history. The dates reported ranged between 126
متن کاملAnalysis of Cerebrospinal Fluid in Diagnosis of Bacterial Meningitis; Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy: A Systematic Review
Background: Analysis of biofluids provides a unique window into the biochemical status of a living organism since the composition of a given biofluid will be modulated according to the level of function of the cells that are intimately concerned with its manufacture and secretion. One of the most successful approaches to biofluid analysis has been the application of NMR spectroscopy. Objective...
